As Light and Life churches we sponsor children through Compassion’s Church Engagement Scheme. Just under 100 children from 8 projects in Rwanda are sponsored by members of our congregations; if you would like more information, please visit Compassion’s website.
One of these children is Belice from the hillside community of Gisuma. She lives under the care of her parents and her home duties include cleaning, carrying water and gathering firewood. There are seven children in the family. Her father and mother are a times employed as subsistence farmers.
For fun Belice likes playing with friends, playing hide and seek and playing ball games. She attends Sunday school and church and participates in the church choir regularly. She attends school where her performance is average.
Gisuma is home to approximately 6000 residents. Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, mud walls and tin roofs. The regional diet consists of maize, beans, bananas, Cassavas, beef, rice and potatoes. Common health problems in this area include malaria and worms. Most adults are unemployed but some workers day labourers and earn the equivalent of 2 pounds per month. This community needs scholastic materials tutoring classes and tuition for secondary education.
